Spectrum Health brought Build-A-Bike® back to kick off its year-long leadership development program. 90 new managers from across the organization met at Spectrum Health University for a Build-A-Bike® Team-Building Event in Grand Rapids, MI, the second workshop in the series. They built 14 bikes, and young children came in at the end to receive them.
Spectrum Health is a not-for-profit health system based in Grand Rapids that serves families and individuals across Michigan. It includes a medical center, regional community hospitals, a dedicated children’s hospital, a multispecialty medical group, affiliated physicians, and the nationally recognized Priority Health plan.
Spectrum Health’s New Managers Build 14 Bikes During Build-A-Bike® Team-Building Event
The program’s theme was “Connect to Purpose,” and Build-A-Bike® put that theme into practice.
The group started a little reserved, which is normal for 90 new managers who don’t know each other yet. That didn’t last. Once the first challenge started, teams competed for bike parts, solved problems together, and kept building until all 14 bikes were done.
For new managers starting a year of leadership training, the workshop gave them a chance to practice the basics, like communicating clearly, sharing the work, and pulling a team toward a common goal, in a way that stuck.
The Best Part: The Kids Walk In
When the last bike was finished, the doors opened, and young children from two organizations Spectrum Health works with came in to receive their bikes. That was the high point of the day. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
“Another fantastic event! Your energy is contagious!”
